A generous sofa can look inviting yet feel awkward when you want to sit upright. If reaching the back cushion means lifting your feet off the floor, the usable seat depth may not suit that sitting position. The right choice starts with how people will use the sofa, not its overall footprint.
Overall depth runs from the front to the back of the sofa. Usable seat depth is the sitting distance from the front of the seat to the supporting face of the back cushion. Ask which measurement a supplier lists; two sofas with similar overall depth can offer different sitting space.
Measure a sofa you already find comfortable with its normal back cushions in place. Record seat height and back angle as well. For curved or angled seating, ask where on the seat the measurement was taken.

For conversation or reading, try sitting with your back supported and your feet resting comfortably. Notice whether the front edge presses behind your knees or whether you slide forward to reach the floor. For lounging, also try your usual curled-up or reclined position.
| Main use | What to check |
|---|---|
| Upright conversation | Back support without perching on the front edge |
| Relaxed lounging | Enough usable space for the preferred posture |
| Shared family seating | Test with the different people who will use it |
| Project reception area | Check sitting down, standing up and the intended visit length |
A deeper seat is not automatically more comfortable. Taller and shorter users may prefer different depths, but height alone does not capture leg proportions, posture or personal preference. There is no single depth that works for every person and use.
A thick back cushion reduces usable sitting space. A softer back cushion can compress under the user, changing the effective support position. Seat cushion compression also changes the feel of the finished seat. Compare complete sofas rather than treating a loose foam sample as a comfort test.

RSK13-B in a furnished room. Compare the complete seat and back cushion arrangement when assessing comfort.
A loose back pillow may shorten the space on an occasional basis, but test that arrangement before relying on it. It should not be the only plan for making a fundamentally unsuitable sofa work. Removable back cushions also do not mean that the sofa is designed for regular use without them.
After checking comfort, mark the sofa footprint on the floor. Include the chaise or return, nearby tables and the paths people use. Confirm access through doors, stairs and lifts separately. A sofa can suit the room visually while its seat still feels too deep.
Give the supplier your intended posture, reference-sofa measurements and the range of users. Ask for a drawing that distinguishes overall depth, usable seat depth, seat height and cushion arrangement. If dimensions change, discuss their effect on the complete design rather than assuming a deeper frame preserves the same comfort.
For project buyers, record the agreed measurements and the configuration of any approved sample. State whether dimensions include back cushions and how the finished item will be measured. This makes quotation and production comparisons clearer.

No. Overall depth includes the back structure; usable seat depth describes the sitting space in front of the back cushion. Confirm the supplier’s measurement convention.
They can reduce usable space and change back support, but the resulting arrangement needs a sitting test. They do not guarantee a suitable everyday fit.
Not necessarily. A chaise and an upright seat serve different postures. Assess the intended use of each section and confirm its actual dimensions.
